Education

The right to education is universal and must extend to all children, youth, and adults with disabilities. This right is enshrined in the Convention on the Rights of the Child (1989) and addressed in several significant, internationally approved declarations, including the World Declaration for Education for All (1990), the Standard Rules on the Equalization of Opportunities for Persons with Disability (1993), the UNESCO Salamanca Statement and Framework for Action (1994), and the Dakar Framework for Action (2000). The goal of the Dakar Framework for Action is to achieve "education for all" by 2015. Todate, Some 113 million children live without the benefit of basic education, according to UNICEF. And of those in school, 24 million children never acquire basic literacy.

The lack of education forms a critical barrier to prosperity. Throughout developing nations, primary education holds the keys for children to grow into strong and healthy adults. Basic education provides for children to become prosperous adults and leaders within their communities. Without primary education, children are far more likely to experience insecurity, malnourishment, and disease. There is a strong link between education and poverty. The result is disadvantaged labor market participation and disadvantaged living conditions

Thus, we encourage investment in international education. Without it, both children and communities remain at risk.

Our Approach

Many governments in the developing world are not able to provide consistent, quality education for their children. We focus our attention on two main areas within the education sector: Private Education and Girls’ Education.

Private Education

Private education in developing nations holds a number of key advantages. It has proven to be more cost effective than public school offerings, despite the scarcity of educational resources. In places where classes are smaller, teachers are personally motivated, and greater attention is paid to the challenges and potential of individual students, private education provides better academic opportunities for children in low-income families and economically poor communities.

Gender Equality

In identifying the best projects, we recognize the particular need to address the deficient educational support available for young girls. Given both the critical benefits of education for girls as well as the key role women play within their broader communities, we recommend projects that bring attention to girls’ education and seek to correct this gender inequality.

Through a variety of projects for critical education in developing nations, important barriers get removed, wonderful minds are opened, and needed leadership is established.
